A scandal has erupted in Romania over Prime Minister Florian Katsu over a crime he committed 21 years ago in the United States. At a press conference today, Katsu said he had no intention of resigning and that the government had begun reforms that needed to be completed, Nova Television reported.

At the heart of the scandal is a case from December 2000, when he was a doctoral student at the University of Iowa in the United States. There he was detained by a police officer after driving while intoxicated.

The Romanian prime minister paid a $ 1,305 fine and remained behind bars for 48 hours.

Critics of Katsu are demanding his resignation, as he hid this fact from his biography when he was first appointed finance minister and then prime minister.

The opposition Social Democratic Party reminds that people with a criminal past are not allowed in power. Florian Katsu is currently campaigning for the chairman of the ruling National Liberal Party and is an opponent of current liberal leader Ludovic Orban.
