The Prime Minister of Italy, Mario Draghi, informed his cabinet on Saturday that he had reached an agreement with the European Commission on the national recovery plan, which paved the way for this plan to be sent to Brussels by the end of the month, informs Reuters.

Italy would receive more than € 200 billion in grants and low-interest loans from the European recovery fund, the largest amount among EU countries. The money would be distributed gradually over six years.

Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s spokesman said the prime minister informed his cabinet on Saturday that he had received a green light from the European Commission, although some “minor adjustments” were still to be finalized. The spokesman said the Commission’s agreement came after Prime Minister Draghi became directly involved in the talks, including a telephone conversation with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

For his part, Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio revealed that Prime Minister Draghi announced the approval from the Commission as ministers reviewed the latest version of the plan. “It was a great atmosphere of collaboration and enthusiasm,” Di Maio said.

Sources quoted by Reuters said that the Commission’s concerns were about the lack of details regarding structural reforms in areas such as public administration, the legal system and the tax system, as well as how the planned investments will be implemented and monitored. .

The working version of the plan includes several dozen projects grouped into six areas: ecological transition, digitization, infrastructure, education and research, social inclusion and health.

The government in Rome claims that thanks to investments and structural reforms in the recovery plan, Italy’s Gross Domestic Product will be 3.6 percentage points higher than it would have been without the recovery plan.

The official deadline for all 27 EU member states to submit their recovery plans is April 30, but Brussels has said that this is not a rigid deadline, so most likely half of the national plans will be sent in. May.

Regarding Romania, the Minister of Investments and European Projects, Cristian Chinea, recently stated that the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) has not been officially sent to Brussels, a decision in this regard will be taken next week. “This is the decision we will take next week. If we decide to send it on April 30, it will be a matter of weeks, not more,” said Cristian Ghinea.
