He was so well liked by his fellow citizens that the mayor of Deveselu, a small municipality in southern Romania, was re-elected in the municipal elections despite having died 11 days ago, due to the Coronavirus (LIVE UPDATES). Ion Aliman passed away on 17 September at the age of 57, and to pay homage to him, those entitled to him have reconfirmed his mandate, with 1,057 votes in favor out of 1,600. An election with a strong symbolic value, at the end of which the citizens went to the man’s grave, in the municipal cemetery, to celebrate his victory.

It is not the first time that the village of Deveselu finds itself at the center of the news: two years ago, a dispute broke out in the village caused by the 250 sheep owned by its resident, Dumitru Bleja, grazing too close to the US anti-missile plant and too often they triggered warning systems. In the name of the security of the military site, the farmer was then forced to demolish the shelter and graze the sheep elsewhere. His claim for damages, however, was rejected by the local justice.
