Zelenskyy to Visit Türkiye Amidst Cross-Border Impacts of Ukraine Conflict
BUCHAREST, Romania – Two Romanian villages, Plauru and Ceatalchioi, were evacuated Monday following a russian drone attack on a civilian ship in Ukrainian waters near the Danube River, which forms part of the border between Romania and Ukraine. Between 100 and 150 residents of Plauru and nearly 300 from Ceatalchioi were moved as a “precautionary measure” due to the risk of explosion from the vessel, which was carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and flying a Turkish flag. All 16 crew members were safely evacuated, according to Turkey’s maritime affairs directorate, and no injuries were reported. Romanian authorities also temporarily halted road and naval traffic in the area. The Romanian Ministry of Defense stated no airspace violations were detected.
The attack targeted the Ukrainian port of Izmail, a key hub for imports and exports, just one day after ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced an agreement to import American liquefied natural gas through the port. This move aims to bolster Ukraine’s energy security as Russia continues to target the nation’s energy infrastructure ahead of winter.
Separately, President zelenskyy announced he will travel to Türkiye on Wednesday to discuss the Black Sea Grain Initiative and energy cooperation. further details regarding the agenda of his visit were not instantly available.
