Roger Federer kneels on the ground

Roger Federer took everyone by surprise Thursday morning. On his Twitter account, the Balois announced that he had undergone surgery on the right knee the day before (Wednesday 19 February) and warned of his absence from competition until the end of June. He will therefore miss Roland-Garros and hopes to be reinstated for Wimbledon.

The surprise was total because before this message, Roger Federer had never reported that “[son] right knee [le] had been bothering for some time ”. This is a typical feature of his way of doing things: he hates giving indications about his health, and thus seems to be looking for excuses after a defeat. “I was hoping that the pain would pass but after a medical examination and discussion with my team, I decided to have an arthroscopy in Switzerland yesterday,” he reveals. Simple “cleaning” or prior to a larger operation? With him, impossible to know and therefore useless to speculate.

A tournament in seven months

According to him, “the doctors confirmed that it was the right decision and are very confident about [son] complete recovery. ” Federer will not be back next week in Dubai, will miss Indian Wells and Miami, postpone again his exhibition in Bogota (deprogrammed in November due to social tensions in Colombia) and above all is already forfeited for Roland -Garros.

In what form will he return to Wimbledon? Will he be mentally sharp and sharp as in January 2017 in Melbourne after his first operation (on the other knee)? Or lacking in competition and blunt as at Wimbledon in 2018? Federer, who has only played one tournament since mid-November (the Australian Open, beaten in the semifinals by Novak Djokovic), is expected to drop to 7th or 8th in the world in the coming months.
