How high are the corona numbers in Germany today?

The nationwide seven-day incidence has risen again. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week on Monday morning as 303.0. For comparison: the previous day the value was 289.0, a week ago it was 201.1 (previous month: 68.7). The health authorities in Germany reported 23,607 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. This is evident from the numbers that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 3:52 a.m. Last Thursday, the number of new infections reached 50,196, a record since the beginning of the pandemic. Exactly one week ago the value was 15,513 infections.

According to the new information, 43 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 33 deaths. The RKI has counted 5,045,076 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not detected.

The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days – the most important parameter for a possible tightening of the corona restrictions – was given by the RKI on Friday at 4.70 (Thursday: 4.65). The value will not be published on the weekend. With the indicator it must be taken into account that hospital admissions are sometimes reported with delay. A nationwide threshold, from when the situation can be viewed critically, is not provided for the incidence of hospitalization, among other things because of large regional differences. The previous high was around 15.5 around Christmas time.

The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at 4,494,300. The number of people who died with or with a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 97,715.

What is the RKI?

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) is an independent higher federal authority. It is a public health facility and monitors the health of the entire population of Germany. Another central area of the RKI is research; the institute is the central research facility of the Federal Republic of Germany.

President of the Robert Koch Institute has been Lothar H. Wieler since March 1, 2015, who has been the focus of reporting since the outbreak of the corona pandemic in Germany.

How does the RKI get the current corona numbers?

The Robert Koch Institute continuously records the current Covid-19 situation. It evaluates all information on the basis of current surveys and estimates the risk for the population in Germany. The RKI regularly announces the current number of corona cases in Germany.

The health authorities receive figures on new infections, recoveries or deaths from all over Germany and transmit them to the RKI. The offices have to adhere to strict rules.

Covid-19 cases that meet the RKI case definition must be electronically transmitted by the responsible health department to the responsible state authority by the next working day at the latest.

From there, the information must be transmitted to the RKI no later than the next working day. This data may not contain the name, place of residence or contact details of the persons concerned.

What does the hospitalization rate mean?

The number, also known as the hospitalization incidence, shows how many corona patients per 100,000 population were admitted to clinics within seven days. It is an important parameter for a possible tightening of the corona restrictions. However, there is no nationwide threshold from when the situation can be viewed critically. The reason for this is that the incidence of hospitalization varies greatly from region to region.

In October the value was 1.9. This Thursday the RKI gave a value of 3.62. The previous high was around 15.5 around Christmas time. It must be taken into account here that hospital admissions are sometimes reported with delay.
