The Transfusion Act (TFG) assigns the Robert Koch Institute important tasks in the field of transfusion medicine. As part of blood donor surveillance, epidemiological data on infections from all German donation facilities are recorded and evaluated. With results from supplementary epidemiological studies, the data provide information about the status and development of infections among blood and plasma donors in Germany.
The Robert Koch Institute is also home to the office of the Blood Working Group, a committee of experts in accordance with Section 24 TFG. It advises the responsible federal and state authorities and publishes opinions and statements on relevant topics in transfusion medicine.
