Rivian, supported by Amazon, is ‘stealing’ Tesla employees to copy its great advantage

A large number of Tesla employees have reportedly been ‘booked’ by Rivian in recent months, aiming to copy the best that Tesla has: the charger network.

The big obstacle to using an electric car is simply recharging it; Unlike a gasoline car, finding a charging point is not as easy as a gas station, much less in Spain. It is something that manufacturers are only now understanding.

Except Tesla, of course. One of the pillars of its plan to move to electric is precisely its network of chargers, which is even expanding in Europe and Spain. In this way, the buyer of a Tesla is more confident that he can recharge it on long trips.

Rivian will copy Tesla’s tactic

It is a tactic whose importance is now evident, but was not in its day. Manufacturers believed that other initiatives, public and private, would handle chargers; It is now that they are discovering how difficult it is to sell electric cars without available chargers.

The one that has understood it is Rivian, an American startup that has received the support of large companies such as Amazon or Ford. And that support has allowed him to start hiring employees who were at Tesla, precisely with the aim of creating his own network of chargers.

Employees who had switched sides would include some of those responsible behind the design, manufacture and installation of Tesla chargers; They would have been responsible for the great growth of the network, with more than 1,900 stations and 17,000 chargers installed in car parks in 37 countries.

Now Rivian intends to do something similar to make his next electric vehicles more attractive. As filtered Electrek, these chargers would be part of the ‘Rivian Adventure Network’.

The word ‘adventure’ comes because Rivian would be the first to install charging points in parks, camping areas and other areas; in this way, they hope to appeal to a type of driver who prefers to spend the weekends in nature.

For adventure

It is a concept that fits very well with the first cars Rivian will sell: the R1T is an electric van, designed to withstand hard work and of course, with capabilities off-roading. The other model in preparation is the R1S, an SUV that will take a little longer to arrive, but should also perform well away from the road.

Rivian’s first chargers are expected to supply up to 200 kW, and be able to recharge two cars at the same time; They will probably use CCS connectors, as that is what the featured R1T and R1S prototypes use.

The owners of the first Rivian would have access to this network of chargers, in addition to others from third parties that also use CCS. Therefore, the initial plan would focus on bringing chargers to areas that have so far been abandoned. The first chargers are expected to be operational next year.
