Rising unrest in Kyrgyzstan: president declares a state of emergency in capital Bishkek

Under pressure from the street, the election commission earlier this week declared the election results invalid. The parliament speaker, the mayor of Bishkek and a number of governors resigned. The prime minister also resigned.

The president will remain in office for now, but announced this morning that he is ready to step down if a new government is appointed. But that can take a long time, because the opposition parties are very divided among themselves.
