RI’s Pediatric Diabetes Cases Soar, Increase 70 Times!

Jakarta

Muhammad Faizi UKK Child and Adolescent Endocrinology The Indonesian Pediatricians Association (IDAI) revealed that the trend of diabetes cases in children has increased tenfold since 2010. Most cases of children have type 1 diabetes mellitus.

“The highest cases of diabetes mellitus are in Finland, the incidence of cases is 37 per 100 thousand. Meanwhile in Asia it is usually less than 5 per 100 thousand population. Indonesia is quite high, two per 100 thousand,” he explained in a press conference, written Monday (6/ 2/2023).

Cases of diabetes in children are most often experienced at the age of 5 to 6 years, or before adolescence. Unfortunately, many of them came to the hospital already in severe condition, making it difficult to get optimal treatment.

Surveillance data from UKK IDAI records that every child with diabetes is reported every year. It jumped from 0.028 per 100 thousand in 2010 to 2 per 100 thousand in 2023.

“It has increased 70 times and most children come in a severe condition, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a severe complication, coma, unconsciousness, shortness of breath, as well as life threatening,” he explained.

“63-71 percent of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus come in severe condition,” he continued.

The problem, according to Faizi, is that many patients do not know they have diabetes mellitus, so most cases are under-diagnosed. As of 2023, there are 1,645 pediatric and adolescent patients, 59.3 percent of whom are women. Most ages are in the 5 to 9 years.

“So that’s from Medan, Padang, Palembang, centers that reported. Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Jogja, Solo, Surabaya, Malang, Makassar, Denpasar, Manado,” he continued.
