RI’s Covid-19 Case Still High, INDEF: Immediately Lockdown!

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia The Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF) suggested that the government impose a regional quarantine or lockdown policy in line with the high daily positive cases of Covid-19 in Indonesia.

INDEF Executive Director, Tauhid Ahmad argued, the policy did lockdown currently it is quite right in the middle of the average positive cases of Corona over 10 thousand cases per day.

As of today, the number of positive cases of Covid-19 in Indonesia has increased by 10,827 new cases. So, accumulated, the number of positive cases of Covid-19 in the country has increased to 1,157,837 people with 176,291 active cases.

Tauhid assessed that the handling of a pandemic in the country through the policy of limiting community activities (PPKM) is currently not optimal enough to suppress the transmission of the virus.

“We suggest that the government opens up a discourse lockdown, 1 week or 2 weeks. This recommendation needs to be seen as an opportunity when it is very frustrating [mengendalikan pandemi], “said Tauhid, in an online presentation at the discussion event, Sunday (7/2/2021).

According to him, economic growth in the first quarter of this year will still be quite depressed due to the continuing social restriction policy, even expanding its area to Java-Bali. INDEF projects that in the first 3 months of this year, Indonesia’s economy will grow negatively in the range of 1%.

“Don’t expect the current situation [PDB] We can grow positively in the first quarter, especially on February 9 the government will continue the PPKM policy on a micro scale, there will definitely be an impact on the economy, “said Tauhid.

Previously, INDEF’s senior economist, Faisal Basri, also voiced the discourse on regional quarantine. For Faisal, the key to getting the Indonesian economy back on track is maximum control of Covid-19 through regional quarantine.

“The most effective is the lockdown,” he said.

Faisal gave an example of the success of Iran and China in controlling Covid-19. As of mid-November, Iran has implemented a lockdown in 100 cities in the country. Iran is known to have ‘given up’ when the wave of three Covid-19 cases appeared.

“The death rate, which used to be close to around 400 people, is now just under 100 active cases it is now lower than Indonesia, although the Iranian case is higher than Indonesia, “said Faisal.

As quoted from the Worldometers website, positive cases of Covid-19 in Iran reached 1,459,370, while in Indonesia there were 1,157,837 per Sunday (7/2).

Faisal continued, it is important for Indonesia to implement a lockdown because it will be effective in breaking the chain of transmission of the new corona virus that causes Covid-19. Although, he did not deny that the economy would be hit hard, but the recovery was fast.
