Lhe police in the Brussels-South zone identified, on Saturday around 9 p.m., “more than 45 arrests” in the context of the riots which started around 2 p.m. in different districts of Anderlecht, according to Fabrice Cumps, the bourgmestre of the commune. Police are controlling the situation, but operations could continue until Saturday night, or even Sunday morning, according to Patrick Evenepoel, the corps chief of the Brussels-South police area.

Calls for the rally, despite the ban on regrouping under security measures linked to the coronavirus pandemic, led to riots on Saturday afternoon in Anderlecht. The appeals were launched on social media to express dissatisfaction following the accidental death on Friday of a young man who fled from a police checkpoint.

Several people have broken the ban on assembly. The police then intervened and were hit by projectiles.

An ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the accident

On Friday evening, a 19-year-old boy, named Adil, was riding a scooter on the Industry quay in Anderlecht when he crashed into a police vehicle in front of him. The victim was fleeing a first patrol which had tried to control him. The vehicle he struck arrived as a backup.

An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the accident. In addition, the bourgmestre of Anderlecht, Fabrice Cumps, said on Saturday that Adil’s parents said they were not responsible for the calls for the rally and that they called for a return to calm in the districts of Anderlecht.
