Director Taco Dibbits of the Rijksmuseum wants to ‘go to extremes’ to paint the painting dating from 1636. The Standard Bearer van Rembrandt for the Netherlands, when the work appears on the market soon.

It was announced today that the work may go up for sale after the French government has decided not to buy it from its current owner, the Rothschild family. It is not yet clear whether and when the work will be offered for sale.

It is a unique work that belongs to the top 10 of his oeuvre. It is his artistic breakthrough in the run-up to De Nachtwacht

The Standard Bearer is, according to Dibbits, the most important work by Rembrandt that is still in private possession and the last chance to buy a painting of this enormous importance. It is a unique work that belongs to the top 10 of his oeuvre. The self-portrait is in fact his artistic breakthrough in the run-up to The Night Watch. It is deeply rooted in Dutch culture and history and symbolizes the rebelliousness of the painter and his country.”

‘Essential’
The value of the work was estimated at 165 million in 2019, when it was temporarily on display in the Rijksmuseum during the Rembrandt-Velázquez exhibition. The Rijksmuseum does not have that money. Dibbits calls on the government and the art world to put their heads together. “We have to do everything we can to get this painting in the Netherlands, it is essential for our country,” says Dibbits.

According to the director, it will not be easy to get the work in. He estimates that there will be at least ten very serious privateers on the coast who would also like to buy the work.

Rothschild
The Rijksmuseum previously did business with the noble and extremely wealthy Rothschild family. Another member of the family put up for sale Marten & Oopjen’s wedding portraits, also painted by Rembrandt. Because the price (160 million euros) was very high, the Netherlands and France eventually bought the two paintings together. They can now be seen alternately in the Rijksmuseum and the Louvre.

Most expensive painting in the world
The estimated asking price of 165 million euros for The Standard Bearer does not come close to the prices for the most expensive paintings in the world. For example, in 2017 the Saudi Ministry of Culture paid 450 million dollars for a portrait of Jesus. That painting is said to have been made by Leonardo da Vinci, although this was later doubted.
