Riga Jurmala Academy returns with online and face-to-face master classes led by world-famous musicians / Day

“We are extremely happy to resume work this year, offering our new talents to meet, communicate and learn from the best musicians. We know from last summer’s experience that students appreciate these opportunities and the quality of online learning has significantly improved and continues to improve,” says Jāzeps Vītola Associate Professor of the Piano Department of the Latvian Academy of Music and Riga Jurmala Head of the Academy Tom Ostrovsky. “Although nothing will replace the face-to-face learning experience that we hope to provide during the summer within the festival, this time will allow us to purposefully establish relationships with musicians, involving an increasing number of students,” Ostrovskis emphasizes.

The next master classes are planned with Omar Tomason (leading clarinetist, Royal Concertgebouw orchestra, 2.12.), Lionel Cote (leading cellist, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, 8.12.) and French violinist Reno Capison (16.12.). The master classes of the festival academy will be organized for orchestral instrument groups, pianists, young conductors and vocalists.

Applications for master classes are organized by individually evaluating students’ performance and applications.

In response to the events caused by the pandemic, Riga Jurmala In the 2020 season, the Academy changed the initially planned format by organizing online master classes for students from Latvia and the Baltic States. Throughout the summer, 30 master classes took place with the participation of leading musicians from the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Natalia Schwab (piccolo), Lionel Cote (cello), Julita Smolen (violin), Tobias Steiman (violin), Jihie Lee (violin), Bettin Fais. Ramona Ortega Kuero (oboe), Benedict Heims (viola) and world-class performers such as cellist Miša Maiskis, classical guitar virtuoso MILOŠ and Norwegian pianist Leif Ūve Andsness.
