Riga introduces a tourist tax

Therefore, all accommodation establishments will have to pay a fee of one euro for each guest’s overnight stay, but not exceeding ten euros if the guest stays longer in the capital.

As previously communicated by the municipality, the tariff for the reception of tourists is widely applied in Europe. It has been implemented in many tourism environments in famous cities such as Berlin, Amsterdam, Rome, Venice, Vienna, Brussels, Lisbon, etc.

The amount of the tariff would be very different in different countries and cities and there are different calculation models, for example the fixed tariff at the price of the service, the tariff differentiated according to the category of the accommodation facility or the season, or for each overnight stay.

The city will use the revenue obtained from the tax for the implementation of projects to support the tourism sector or for the development of tourism infrastructure and to promote international recognition of Riga.

Riga Municipality adopted similar rules already in 2019, anticipating the introduction of the tourist tax from 2021, but due to the sharp decline in the number of tourists caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the introduction of the tax has been postponed.

Nights spent by children under the age of 18 in Riga tourist accommodation will not be charged.

The administration of the tax will be provided by the Municipal Revenue Department of the Riga City Council.
