Rías Baixas exports 12% more despite the rigors of the pandemic

International sales of the Rías Baixas Designation of Origin wines grew again. According to data made public yesterday in the Mugartegui pazo by the president of the Regulatory Council, Juan Gil, and the general secretary, Ramón Huidobro, wineries sold 12.22 percent more wine and exports grew by 14.33 percent in turnover. These are figures corresponding to the campaign between August 31, 2020 and September 1, 2021.

Exports to international markets in this 2020-21 campaign amounted to 9,263,352 liters for a total amount of 52,245,671 euros. This represents an increase of one million liters and 6.5 million euros compared to the previous season.

The average price of the liter sold is above the national average, reaching 5.64 euros, with an increase of 0.10 euro cents compared to last season and exceeding the figures prior to the pandemic. Of the more than 179 wineries that make up this denomination, a majority, specifically 107, carried out export operations.

These historical figures translate into 12,351,136 bottles of Rías Baixas wine, spread over more than 70 countries. “Neither the health crisis nor the economic uncertainty, nor the tariffs imposed by the US administration on wines, nor the threats of Brexit, have been able to with the Rías Baixas sector, which once again shows signs of strength in its sales in abroad ”, they say in a statement from Rías Baixas.

The main destinations are the United States, Great Britain and Puerto Rico

The Council highlights the sales increases in the Netherlands (50 percent more), Ireland (with almost 28%), Puerto Rico and Mexico (with 23.82% and 22.67%, respectively). This upward trend is also shown in other markets such as the United States (an increase of 13.36%), the United Kingdom (13.66%), each time with more even figures in volume, as well as Sweden (13.20% more ).

There are also destinations that, although they are not among the top ten in terms of sales, are increasingly interested in Rías Baixas wines. This is the case of the Dominican Republic, with 156,524 liters, and Japan, with 120,833 liters. The European Union remains the main buyer by volume of Rías Baixas wines with 4,226,121 liters and a growth of 8.83%; while, in value, America is positioned as number one, with a business volume of 25,013,900 euros, which means a growth of 20.5 percent. By country, the main destinations are the United States, the United Kingdom and Puerto Rico.
