Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Indonesia was watching with caution the Australian government’s decision to acquire nuclear-powered submarines.

In its statement, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed the importance of Australia’s commitment to continue to fulfill its obligations regarding nuclear non-proliferation.
“Indonesia encourages Australia to continue to fulfill its obligations to maintain peace, stability and security in the region in accordance with the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation,” he said, as quoted by Sindonews on Friday (17/9/2021).

In this regard, Indonesia emphasizes the importance of respecting international law including UNCLOS 1982 in maintaining peace and security in the region
