KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat New Hampshire 38-27 on Saturday, securing a key CAA Football victory and boosting their record to 4-2. The Rams‘ offense exploded in the final frame, scoring 21 unanswered points to overcome the Wildcats.
The win marks Rhode Island’s fourth of the season, continuing a promising campaign under head coach Chris Smelley. This victory is particularly notable as the Rams navigate a competitive CAA conference and strive for a potential FCS playoff berth. Trailing 27-17 entering the fourth quarter, Rhode Island quarterback Rory McDonald orchestrated the comeback. He connected with wide receiver Dave Sharpe for a 25-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 27-24. Following a defensive stop, running back Ezekiel Kornegay powered into the endzone from 12 yards out, giving the Rams their first lead of the game at 31-27. McDonald sealed the victory with a 15-yard touchdown pass to tight end Thomas O’Brien.
McDonald finished the game with 285 passing yards and three touchdowns. Kornegay rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown, while Sharpe tallied 112 receiving yards and a score. Defensively, linebacker James Penrose led the Rams with 10 tackles.
New Hampshire’s quarterback, Max Brosmer, threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns, but the Wildcats’ offense stalled in the fourth quarter. Running back Dylan Laube added 85 rushing yards and a touchdown for New Hampshire.
Rhode Island will return to action next Saturday, traveling to face Villanova. New Hampshire will host Maine.
