REVIEW: Dainis Tenis “Decoder” – nra.lv

On the evening of the very last day of June, pianist and composer Dainis Tenis, who is better known for being part of the band “Dagamba”, performed at “Hanzas Peron”, performing his original music from the newly released album. The music and sound recordings for 11 compositions were made some time ago – at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, however, the full-length album became publicly available for the keyboardist at a significant time – right before his birthday (the musician turned 30 on June 21) and his first solo concert in Riga .

“I am indescribably pleased that my album can finally be heard in public! It has been waiting for the right moment for a long time, and I think it was worth waiting for this moment. “Hanzas Peron” was clearly the right place for my music to be performed live for the first time, and the timing of my notable birthday also greatly enhanced the festive feelings,” says Dainis Tenis. He performed at the concert, playing music on three instruments – a concert grand piano, a “Moog” analog synthesizer and the “Una Corda” piano built by Dāvids Kļaviņas.

“Decoder” is a very personal and autobiographical work, inspired by Daini Teni’s experiences in real life – memories, feelings, events.

This album is like “the unspoken words and suppressed emotions that resulted in piano and electronic sound patterns”, but “stylistically Dain’s music combines the genres relevant to him – contemporary classical, ambient and electronic music,” so connoisseurs say. The album is available on all streaming platforms.

PAR. Is Daini Teni inspired to be so active by his creative colleague in the group “Dagamba” Valters Pūce or vice versa, but both are now diligent musicians – last year their joint album “Radīts Latvija” was released, with this program they toured Latvia quite a bit, and not for a moment the action with “Dagamba” etc. is also not acceptable, but most importantly, any of these works are rated with a big plus sign! Also “Decoder”. Experts of this kind of music should judge the most academic section, while the compositions in which the piano intertwines with ambient electronics, such as the monumental “Momentum I & Momentum II” (the last couple of minutes of this ten-minute long piece could also be shortened) can definitely be recommended to ordinary listeners. ..) or the excellent “Forward”. Of course, there is nothing to blame for the collaboration between Daina Tenės and Valter Puči in the composition “Review”.

AGAINST. In the most academic works (“Enter”, “Loop”, “Pause”, etc.) you can be amazed at how fast Daiņas’ fingers move on the piano keys (you don’t even need to see it, you can easily imagine it), but only experts in this field will be able to fully appreciate it .
