Satan’s Servant 2: Communion is currently showing in cinemas throughout Indonesia. The latest film by director Joko Anwar has succeeded in making the audience goosebumps because the shooting location has been neglected for 15 years, adding to the impression of horror.
The shooting location for Pengabdi Setan 2 is in a simple flat owned (rusunami) located behind Sumber Arta Market, Bintara Jaya, West Bekasi, West Java. The 15-storey abandoned building is a program of 1,000 towers initiated by the Ministry of Public Housing (Kemenpera) or is currently being merged into the Ministry of PUPR.
“The flats were built within the framework of the Kemenpera’s 1,000 tower program. The Kemenpera’s formal deputy at that time recorded data to provide recommendations for which flats could be included in the 1,000 Tower Rusunami Program,” said PUPR Ministry Spokesperson, Endra S. The program for 1,000 towers was launched for the first time during the administration of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), which was built in 2007-2009. Initially this flat was built as a subsidized program for low-income people (MBR) to have decent housing.
Unfortunately, in its realization, the program stopped in the middle of the road and was left abandoned until it became the shooting location for Pengabdi Setan 2. Endra suspected that the building was stalled due to financial difficulties from private developers.
“These flats were built by private developers and private funds (non-state budget). The flats were not completed, perhaps because of financial difficulties to complete them,” he explained.
In an interview, Joko Anwar said that there is a floor that cannot be used for filming, namely the 7th floor.
“There are several places the guards say don’t come, don’t enter the 7th floor, it’s forbidden, so we don’t go in. Once someone came in and something unwanted happened, you don’t need to tell it so it won’t be sensational, but that’s the story of the flats,” said Joko Anwar.
