Reunion between families separated since 2020 on the border between Mexico and the United States – LINFO.re

Thanks to the Hugs Not Walls event, around 200 families were able to meet for three minutes at the border between the United States and Mexico after long months without seeing each other.

Nearly 200 families reunited thanks to the “Hugs not walls”

The “Hugs not walls” event, canceled last year due to the Covid-19, made it possible to reunite more than 200 families on the border between United States and the Mexico, reports the newspaper The Parisian. These Mexican families are separated between the two countries for visa or residence permit reasons. Each year, they can take advantage of this truce to see and embrace each other.

Testimonials from families

“It’s three minutes, but it will be the happiest three minutes of our life, for all the people who are here and on that side, because we are going to meet again, to kiss each other, to feel like family”, declare family members of migrants. “A video call, a photo, it’s never the same, there is no way to feel this hold”, according to other participants in this event.

More than 178,600 migrants arrested in April

For 15 years, the highest number of undocumented migrants arrested at the border between Mexico and the United States was registered last April, more than 178,600 migrants. Among these migrants were minors who arrived alone without being accompanied by adults, 82% of them coming from Mexico and the “northern triangle” of Central America.
