Retail, hospitality and travel industry unanimously voted negative NOW

Entrepreneurs in the retail, catering and travel industry became a lot more gloomy about the economic climate in March. “The last time that the retail trade, the catering industry and the travel industry were all three negative about the economic climate was in December 2014,” CBS reports Monday.

“The expectations of entrepreneurs in the hospitality and travel industry are, compared to previous surveys in March, the most negative since 2012.” The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) comes to these conclusions on the basis of the Dutch Business Survey.

In the survey, entrepreneurs are asked every month to estimate developments and expectations around their company. At present, the majority of entrepreneurs in the hospitality, retail and travel industry expect it to get worse in the coming months.

“On balance, these entrepreneurs were still positive about the expected turnover and personnel in the coming months, but to a lesser extent than in previous years,” says Statistics Netherlands. The statistics bureau notes that 90 percent of the entrepreneurs had already completed the questionnaire before March 12, when stricter measures were announced by the cabinet on that date.

Producer confidence to almost zero

Product confidence fell to almost zero (0.2) across the board in March, from 3.7 in February. According to Statistics Netherlands, this is the lowest level since September 2014, since then the number of entrepreneurs who voted positive exceeded the number of manufacturers who were negative.
