Results after 40 minutes: Researchers present Corona test mobile in Dresden

Researchers at the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft Dresden want to use a new method and a corona test mobile to detect infections more quickly in the future.

Dresden – Researchers at the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft want to use a new method and a corona test mobile to detect infections more quickly in the future. “Tests and results are available quickly and directly on site, for example at possible corona hotspots,” said Fraunhofer project manager Gerd Geißlinger on Friday at the presentation of the test mobile in Dresden.

The scientists have developed a new procedure for this purpose, with which the previous minimum evaluation time is to be reduced from currently 4 hours to 40 minutes. Complex and costly analysis devices would also not be required to detect a corona infection.

It is conceivable that the test mobile could be used at the entrance to events or for examinations in schools and companies.

After the certification, the test mobile should be on the road this year, says Geißlinger. Instead of a swab, the test can also be done with a mouthwash.

Up to 100 people can be tested on the go per hour. The genetic material is examined for viruses.

Geißlinger is director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology (IME), which developed the prototype together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Technology (IBMT).

The President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Reimund Neugebauer, spoke of a “historic day in the fight against Corona”. The newly developed process is an important step in effectively countering the spread of Sars-Cov-2.

Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (45, CDU) emphasized the importance of reliable test procedures for breaking chains of infection. The new test procedure could help to quickly identify people suffering from the coronavirus and send them to quarantine.
