Respiratory Illnesses Surge in Britain: Experts Say Infections are Certain, But Vaccination Remains Key
London – A rise in respiratory illnesses, including colds, flu, and COVID-19, is currently being observed across Britain, prompting health officials to remind the public of preventative measures. While tens of thousands can die from flu during a severe winter, experts say current circulating viruses aren’t demonstrably causing more serious illness in or else healthy individuals.
The increase in infections comes as the UK Health security Agency (UKHSA) urges eligible individuals to get vaccinated against flu, COVID-19, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) to protect the most vulnerable – older adults and those wiht underlying health conditions.
“We all react in different ways – and we don’t really understand why,” explains professor Ball. “Of course, age and fitness have a lot to do with it,but sometimes it is just yoru individual genetics or how tired and rundown you may be,or when you were last exposed to that particular virus.”
Health officials recommend simple steps to limit the spread of infection: regular handwashing, particularly after coughing or sneezing, staying home when sick, and considering mask use in public spaces.
Professor Ball emphasizes that for healthy young adults and those of working age, experiencing occasional respiratory illnesses is a natural part of life and can even be beneficial. “Most people will get one or two respiratory infections every year. In some ways, it’s a good thing when you are a child or healthy adult,” she says. “By getting exposed you are building up your immunity through natural infection – so when you are older you hopefully have enough immunity to not get severely ill.”
Despite the inevitability of some infections, vaccination remains the most effective way to protect against severe illness, particularly for those at highest risk.
