The UN World Food Program (WFP) called for access to residents of Ukrainian cities surrounded by Russians, as they could face starvation.

This is stated in statement WFP.

According to the WFP, since the beginning of the war, 1.4 million Ukrainians have already received its food aid. Until the end of April, it aims to cover 2.3 million people, but for this it is necessary to reach Mariupol, in particular, where 100,000 people in need can now be.

Complicating the food problem is the fact that more than 7 million Ukrainians became internally displaced because of the war, because this led to a violation of logistics. WFP estimates that about 60% of them are worried that they will not be able to provide themselves with food.

“We call on everyone to give us access to people in besieged cities. It’s one thing when people suffer destruction, it’s another when they are starved to death,” said WFP Executive Director David Bezley.

As reported, Russian aggression caused in Mariupol one of the biggest humanitarian disasters. The invaders are bombing unarmed residents, blocking humanitarian aid.

The Mariupol mayor said that up to 20,000 civilians have died in the city since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion.

The conflict in Ukraine is also causing a wave of famine in other parts of the world. World food prices have risen sharply since the start of the conflict and are now at record highs. This is expected to further limit access to food for millions of people who are already under stress from food inflation in their countries.
