Researchers find minerals never seen in nature in giant meteorite from Somalia – Okezone News

ALBERTA – Researchers investigating meteorite discovered in Somalia in 2020 have unearthed two minerals never seen before outside a laboratory.

The minerals, dubbed elaliite and elkinstantonite, were discovered in the El Ali iron meteorite by researchers at the University of Alberta in Canada. These two minerals have only been observed after being synthesized in the laboratory and have never been observed in nature.

“Every time you find a new mineral, it means the actual geological conditions, the chemistry of the rock, are different from what’s been found before,” said Chris Herd, a professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta. a declaration. Sputnik.

“That’s what makes it interesting: In this particular meteorite, there are two officially described minerals that are new to science.”

The El Ali meteorite was very large, measuring 16.5 tons and is classified as an IAB iron meteorite, which means that meteoric iron is different from what is found on Earth, meteoric iron exists in a pure metallic state, not in ores, it is often alloyed with nickel and mottled with some silica. It is in silica that new minerals are discovered.

Finding new materials in space rocks is not uncommon, as they can come from anywhere in the solar system or even further away. Scientists had hoped that more of the new mineral could be found in the El Ali meteorite, but it is reportedly preparing to be sold.
