Researchers Believe There Are People Who Are Immune to Covid-19 : Okezone Trend

EVERY people never have the exact same physical and genetic as one another. One of them is how a person’s body deals with diseases that enter the body.

There are some people who experience abnormalities in their bodies, so they end up suffering from autoimmune. However, there are also those who are born with higher immunity than others.

Indeed, 99.9 percent of human genetics are identical to each other. However, keep in mind that 0.1 percent or more of these genes have differences with other individuals. These differences can affect many things, one of which is resistance or susceptibility to diseases such as HIV.

Certain small changes in the genetic code can greatly affect this. The more we know about this particular gene, the better. This condition makes it possible to create drugs that can mimic genetic differences.

With that in mind, Immunologist from the Athens Academy, Evangelos Andreakos said that researchers are looking for people around the world who may be immune to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Later, the gene could hold the key to potentially treating Covid-19.

“The introduction of SARS-CoV-2 into populations, on a global scale, has provided yet another demonstration of the tremendous clinical variability between individuals in the course of infection. From asymptomatic infection to life-threatening illness,” Evangelos said, summarizing from Science Alert.

Understanding of the life-threatening pathophysiology of Covid-19 has advanced rapidly since the disease was first discovered in December 2019. But researchers still know little about the human genetic and immunological basis of innate resistance to SARS-CoV-2.

While there may not be much information about this innate resistance right now, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. The researchers noted that there were several cases of one of the household members being spared from Covid-19. There is also someone who is immune despite being in a high-risk environment.

There have also been some serious studies in this regard, but so far the results have revealed only minor differences. An example is a study last year which stated that blood type O appears to show little resistance to SARS-CoV-2 infection.

In addition, other studies have looked at proteins such as the ACE2 receptor or TMEM41B. This protein seems to be needed by the virus to enter or replicate inside the cell. Researchers have uncovered several secrets in a population that may be genetically resistant to SARS-CoV-2.

“We propose a strategy to identify, recruit and genetically analyze individuals who are naturally resistant to SARS-CoV-2 infection. We first focused on uninfected household contacts of people with COVID-19 symptoms,” said the research team.

The researchers then considered individuals who were exposed to cases without personal protective equipment. The study was conducted for at least 1 hour per day, and for the first 3-5 days of symptoms at home. They were then tested with a negative PCR test and a negative blood test four weeks after exposure.

The goal is primarily to look for T cells to make sure that the person has not been infected in the past. We have enrolled more than 400 individuals who meet the criteria for inclusion in the special resistance study cohort. “Collaborative enrollment of study participants continues (link here), and subjects from around the world are welcome,” he added.

With vaccines, promising drugs, and more understanding of the virus, researchers are seeing life starting to look a little more normal. But Covid-19 is likely to stay around for a long time.
