Research: Vitamin D Reduces Cancer Risk and Combats Covid-19

Vitamin D reduces the risk of advanced cancer until it helps Covid-19 patients recover.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Nutrition is an important part of food because it is needed by the body for basic functions that are not produced by the body itself. One nutrient that has been widely discussed because it is effective in increasing immunity, especially against viruses is vitamin D.

Recent research has found that vitamin D can help reduce cancer risk advanced stage. In fact, it can also help patients who are recovering from COVID-19.

The researchers said that people who took vitamin D supplements regularly were 17 percent less likely to develop end-stage cancer, and also reduced their risk of dying. The research was carried out by experts at Harvard University.

The study, which has been published in the medical journal JAMA Network Open this counters preliminary findings from a study of 25,000 people published in 2018. The preliminary study found that there was no benefit to taking vitamin D, as it did not show a reduction in overall cancer diagnosis.

However, recent studies have successfully carried out other analyzes to come to the conclusion that vitamin D supplements have reduced cancer deaths. This can be explained by the fact that vitamin D appears to stop metastatic cancer, an aggressive type that spreads to other parts of the body.

Researcher Dr Paulette Chandler, primary care doctor and epidemiologist at Harvard Women’s and Brigham Hospital in Boston, said vitamin D was a readily available supplement. They are also cheap and have been used and studied for decades.

“Our findings, especially the strong risk reduction seen in normal-weight individuals, provide new information about the relationship between vitamin D and advanced cancer,” he said. Times Now News on Saturday (21/11).

There is also rapidly growing evidence that vitamin D is effective at protecting against Covid-19. In another study published by doctors from PGIMER, it was found that the role of vitamin D supplements has been established in achieving SARS-CoV-2 RNA negativity among COVID-19 patients.

Vitamin D has an immunomodulatory effect and can reduce the susceptibility and severity of viral infections. Research entitled Short term, high-dose vitamin D supplementation for Covid-19 disease ini dilakukan oleh Dr Ashu Rastogi, Dr Anil Bhansali, Dr Niranjan Khare, Dr Vikas Suri, Dr Narayana Yaddanapudi, Dr Naresh Sachdeva, Dr GD Puri dan Dr Pankaj Malhotra.

The study included 40 asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic Covid-positive patients who were deficient in vitamin D. Patients requiring invasive ventilation or with significant comorbidities were not included in the study. The study concluded that high-dose vitamin D supplements helped achieve negative SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the majority of participants.

“The negativity of SARS-CoV-2 RNA by cholecalciferol (vitamin D) supplementation could help reduce the transmission rate of the highly contagious SARS-CoV-2 infection,” the study concluded.
