Research: T Cells of Covid-19 Survivors Respond to a New Variant of the Corona Virus

TEMPO.CO, Chicago – a research recently showed a critical component in the immune system known as T cells, which fight infection with the original version of the coronavirus, also seems to protect against the three most worrying variants of Covid-19.

The conclusion resulted from a research by the United States laboratory released on Tuesday, March 30, 2021.

A number of recent studies have shown that variants Covid-19 certain can interfere with the protection of a person’s immunity from antibodies and vaccines.

But antibodies – which block the coronavirus from attaching to human cells – may not recognize the entire history, according to research conducted by researchers at the National Institute of Allergic Diseases and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

T cells appear to play an important additional protective role. “Our data, as well as results from other groups, suggest that the response of T cells to Covid-19 in those infected with the original version of the virus appears to be fully recognizing the major new variants identified in the UK, South Africa and Brazil,” said Andrew Redd of NIAID. and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, which led the research.

Researchers analyzed the blood of 30 Covid-19 survivors before the emergence of new, more contagious variants of Covid.

From the samples, they found specific forms of T cells that are active against the virus. They also looked at how the T cells could fight a worrying variant that originated in South Africa, Britain and Brazil.

Researchers found that the T cell response was largely intact and could recognize nearly all mutations in viral variants.

The findings add to the results of previous research which also showed that T cell protection appears to be intact against the coronavirus variant.

The NIAID researchers say large-scale research is needed to confirm these findings. Continuous monitoring of the antibody-escaped variants and T-cell protection needs to be done, said Redd. The document has been accepted for publication in the Open Forum Infectious Diseases, but has not yet been peer reviewed.
