Research Says Dairy Products Are Good for the Heart

JAKARTA – There has been a lot of debate in the past about what dairy products good or bad for heart health . There is some research who have supported and dismissed claims that consuming milk or yogurt can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease due to the presence of fat, cholesterol, saturated fatty acids, and possibly lactose.

With all the misunderstanding and confusion that has occurred so far, in fact dairy products such as low-fat or non-fat cheese, milk and yogurt have become very popular in the community. However, recent research has revealed that when consumed in moderation, dairy products can actually be good for heart health.

As reported by the Boldsky page, there is a recent study published in the European Heart Journal, in which the study examines the impact of dairy products on heart health. This study involved 136,384 respondents who were followed for nine years. Research aims to assess and understand how consumption of dairy products (such as milk, yogurt, cheese) will impact health.

Researchers examined the individual components or ingredients present in dairy products to reveal theoretical evidence that dairy products do play a role in improving a person’s heart health. Starting with vitamin D which can help improve blood lipid profiles, improve insulin sensitivity, and regulate blood pressure. Meanwhile, the calcium content in milk can help by reducing blood vessel resistance and limiting fat absorption.

In addition, the content of potassium, magnesium and phosphorus in dairy products helps in managing a person’s blood pressure. Likewise, bioactive proteins and peptides help in increasing satiety levels, as well as reducing high blood pressure levels. Fatty acids in milk such as linoleic acid have anti-inflammatory properties and can help increase blood lipid profiles and increase insulin sensitivity.

According to researchers, dairy products are still good for us to consume and milk is good for our bodies because they contain various nutrients such as amino acids, unsaturated fats, vitamins K-1 and K-2, calcium, and probiotics.

Meanwhile, consuming milk in moderation can help the body where a review study conducted at Monash University in Australia revealed that consuming dairy products, especially milk in moderation has a lower risk of hypertension than those who consume less dairy products.

Recent evidence suggests that consumption of dairy foods, including milk, cheese, and yogurt can help protect your heart health, but it is important to note that consumption in moderation is key. Although it is good for your heart health, dairy products should be consumed in a controlled manner.
