Hello, I am trying to find out the descendants of French people who emigrated to the United States from the second part of the 19th century. I get lost in online documents in the U.S. I cannot locate birth or death certificates. Maybe there are people here who can tell me how to proceed? As my research is multiple I start with the elements of which I am certain in France (all in Drome and from departmental archives). Marie Victoire TORTEL (daughter of Etienne Tortel and Victoire Damiron) born May 31, 1824 in Peyrins (26) married April 5, 1843 (in Peyrins) Joseph Cazimir DUC-DODON (born February 6, 1818 in Rochefort Samson -26) . The couple moved to Rochefort Samson (Jeseph Cazimir being a municipal teacher there) where Marie Adelle DUC were born successively on March 29, 1844, Gustave DUC on January 30, 1846, who died a week later on February 5, 1846 and Marie Joséphine DUC, the December 11, 1848. March 26, 1852 Joseph Cazimir died in Rochefort Samson. Since 1852, and for a long time I have lost track in France of Marie Victoire and her two daughters Marie Adelle and Marie Joséphine. In a family correspondence of more than 50 years ago, I found this information: “It is the daughter of a brother of Joseph Cazimir who would have married a Mr. PRINTZ, engineer in Chicago” No indication of first names, neither for her, nor for him. No date either. As the said brother died single I thought this information was wrong. I have, thanks to Filae and FamilySearch found a match: A marriage in New Orleans between Frank Printz and Joséphine DUC, January 16, 1882. From the various marriage documents (familysearch film n ° 004705633 view 12/563 and film n ° 004769195 view 22 and 23/663) I know that Frank Printz would have been born in Saint Louis in Missouri, probably in 1846 and that he comes from Jeanerette Iberia parish while Josephine is from Saint James parish. How to get more details about him and his parents Charlotte Rodumina and Charles F Printz? And what happened to Frank and Josephine? Have they had children? How to find their descendants? Joséphine would have died on June 3, 1898 but I cannot decipher the death certificate from a parish register and in particular the cause of death (familysearch film n ° 007797727 view 442) I also tried this link: https : //www.sos.la.gov/HistoricalResources/ResearchHistoricalRecords/LocateHistoricalRecords/Pages/LouisianaDeathRecords.aspx but I do not have access to the document. I then wanted to know when she entered Louisiana. I found a Joséphine DUC of German origin (!) arrived on February 27, 1866 on the Bolivian. (familysearch film n ° 000200191 view 799/848) I also found the arrival of V DUC (30-year-old man ) accompanied by Adela DUC (16 year old boy) on November 4, 1854 aboard the Susan and coming from Marseille. (familysearch film n ° 000200179 views 551 to 553/752 and film n ° 007648414 views 5491 and 5492/7721) Although these elements do not match completely I dig on the side of Adela DUC and discover a marriage in 1860 with Edouard Monteuse, then during the 1870 census (familysearch film n ° 000552021 view 42/308) the existence of a daughter Léonie born in 1861 (in passing Adela becomes Adelle and a year of birth 1844 more in line with the one I am looking for) In this same census (census) of 1870, I find the profession of Edward: clerk apothecary (employee of pharmacy) and also a Louise Monteuse student of the convent of Saint Joseph. (familysearch film n ° 000552021 view 58/308) Is this the twin sister of Léonie? or Léonie and Louise are the same person registered twice? At this time I can not find anything in the censuses on Marie Victoire DUC (TORTEL), nor on Joséphine but maybe they are listed on the parishes of Saint James, Iberia or Asuncion? I then wanted to know what could be their framework of life in Louisiana between 1850 and 1900 so I looked at the newspapers of the time (via www.newspapers.com and a “registered guest” account which gives free access to a large quantity of publications in French for Louisiana) I learned that Léonie Monteuse received a music prize on August 2, 1874 at the convent of the Sisters of St Joseph. I also learn that Edouard Monteuse’s pharmacy developed significantly between 1864 and 1874. and that one of the partners HJ Rivet became the sole owner in May 1875 (Le Meschacebe, Bonnet Carre, Louisiana, May 29 , 1875) After this date I find no trace of the Monteuse family in Louisiana. No trace of Marie Victoire DUC either, and besides, no certainty that these are the people I am looking for. Regarding Frank Printz, an assault reported by “The Lafayette Gazette” of May 14, 1898: “Shot in the Face” allows me to learn that Frank Printz “has an invalid wife and three children in New Orleans” (une femme et 3 children at New Orleans) The story of Frank Printz’s suicide in Saint Louis which we find in “The St Louis Republic – page 3” of September 17, 1902 allows us to validate a certain number of information concerning him. Frank Printz was born in Germany and arrived with his family in New York on May 6, 1862 from Hamburg on the ship “Hammonia” (familysearch film n ° 004679887 seen 24/512) On the Hammonia there was CF Printz 56 years old – born in 1806 – merchant – Frank’s father, Charlotte born 1820 his mother, Gustav born in 1841 his brother and witness at his marriage, Carl born in 1843 his other brother, Fridk = FRANK born in 1846, and Bertha his younger sister born in 1851. (There is also Caroline born in 1808 who must be Frank’s aunt). In addition, this article allows me to validate the death of Joséphine in June 1898, since it is written that Frank remarried Lizzett Roemer who had taken care of him for four years. I also learn that one of Frank’s children is a girl named IDA who was still a minor in 1902 and that the latter is placed in the good care of Bertha Printz, who became Mrs. Tom Eckart after 1880 and who lives in Okawville, Illinois. With “Find a gtave” I find the burial place of Gustave born in BERLIN on 02/11/184 and died on 08/10/1914 at Gatewood gardens in Saint Louis and that of Frank and Lizzetta at Saint Peter’s Cemetery. Other elements, such as the naturalization of Gustave and Frank on September 5, 1870 (familysearch film n ° 001006362 view 81/115) or the probable presence of their mother Charlotte, then widowed, in Prairie du Long in the 1880 census (familysearch film # 1254237 “Printz”) brings me to Illinois but finds nothing about Ida and the two other children of Josephine and Frank. The recent indexation of Filae of civil status acts of Seine Maritime enabled me to find the trace of the MONTEUSE family from 1876 in Bois Guillaume (domiciled rue du Bas quartier du mont Fortin according to the census) and to validate the sequence in Louisiana from 1854 to 1875. With Filae and the AD76s I can then complete this family branch by finding the death certificates of Marie Adelle, the birth and death certificates of Charles Edouard (see the messages on the two deaths of ‘Isidore Monteuse), the marriage and death certificates of Léonie with Franklin William Bennett (+ death certificate), the birth, marriage and death certificates of their daughters Ida Adéla and Leila Léonie. This validates the arrival in Louisiana of Marie Victoire and Marie Adelle in 1854. For Marie Joséphine, the 1856 and 1861 censuses of Peyrins in the Drome show that she lived with her maternal grandparents Etienne TORTEL and Victoire Damiron and that ‘ she was not on the 1854 trip. It was not until the death of her grandfather on June 17, 1865 that she left for Louisiana. It is therefore very probably the passenger of the Bolivian who arrived in February 1866. From there, I was stuck and more particularly: what became of Marie Victoire after 1854? Did she remarry and have children in Louisiana? When and where did she die? (I only know that his death is prior to that of his daughter Marie Adelle on June 6, 1894). Who are the three children of Marie Joséphine and Frank Printz? And did these children have offspring themselves? A BIG Thank you in advance to those who can help me in my research, Régis
