At the arrival of the “Dresden Green”, as it is called here, the top of the Empire State Building naturally glowed green. Even if that could hardly be seen in the thick New York fog clouds. The hat jewelery with the 41-carat diamond can be seen as the “sparkling ambassador of Dresden and Saxony” until the beginning of March in the Metropolitan Museum – together with 16 other loans from the Green Vault, the treasury of the Saxon state capital:

“The Green Vault is the most important collection of its kind in the world. Many important rulers have contributed to this collection. A heart of German cultural heritage in the heart of Europe.”

Max Hollein raves in the ABC interview when he talks about the Green Vault. The Austrian director of the Metropolitan Museum could not have dreamed that his exhibition ‘Making Marvels “- making miracles – might have been the salvation for many of the loans from Dresden.

Opening a few hours after the Dresden art theft

Because a few hours before the opening of the New York exhibition, strangers in Dresden stole parts of the unique jewelery collection:

“These objects are extremely valuable. Not only because of the material, especially because of the history and craftsmanship. If they were lost, it would be a hard blow – not just for the Green Vault and Dresden, but for all of humanity. ”

The 17 loans from Dresden, along with numerous other objects from the treasuries of European princes from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, have been on view in the Museum am Central Park since Monday. According to the museum, the security precautions have not been increased after the spectacular robbery in Dresden.

“Of course we all hope that the works will reappear and return to their original location in the Grünes Gewölbe. They are part of the history of Saxony and Germany. But also part of the history of the museum. And they have enormous emotional value for the people in Dresden.”
