A Biden administration official said the United States is closely monitoring the rise in respiratory illnesses in China, but added, “We are seeing seasonal trends. Nothing seems out of the ordinary. … At this time, there is no indication that there is a link between people seeking U.S. emergency room care and the outbreak of respiratory illnesses in China.”
The spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, Liu Pengyu, commented in response to Rubio’s letter. “The related claim is pure fabrication with bad intentions. China firmly opposes it,” he said.
In recent months, the United States and China have continued to increase the number of flights between the countries. Although this number is still far below the level in 2019.
Previously in January 2020, then US president Donald Trump banned most non-US citizens who had recently been in China to enter the United States due to concerns about COVID-19, but does not limit flights between the two countries.
