Luke Letlow has just been elected to Congress. On December 18, he announced his virus infection on Twitter. He died that night.
A recently elected Republican congressman from the US state of Louisiana has died after being infected with corona at the age of 41. “Covid-19 took the elected congressman (Luke) Letlow from us far too soon,” wrote state governor John Bel Edwards on Wednesday night on Twitter. Letlow’s spokesman, Andrew Bautsch, confirmed the death of the politician in the US newspaper “News Star”.
According to the Washington Post, Luke Letlow is the highest-ranking US politician who died of Covid-19. It wasn’t until December that Letlow prevailed in a runoff election to represent his constituency in Congress. He should have been sworn in in office on Sunday.
Letlow made his corona infection public on December 18. First of all, the politician went into quarantine at home. When his condition worsened, he was admitted to a hospital.
Letlow leaves behind his wife and two children, according to US media. Numerous US politicians expressed their condolences on Twitter. According to data from the Johns Hopkins University, around 19.5 million people in the USA have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 pathogen, and more than 338,000 people have died. In absolute terms, that’s more than in any other country in the world.
