Republican from Texas becomes first US congressman killed by covid-19 | International

Republican Congressman Ron Wright died of covid-19, his team announced Monday, becoming the first member of the U.S. Capitol to succumb to the virus.

The 67-year-old Texas lawmaker died Sunday. “During the previous two weeks, Ron and (his wife) had been hospitalized” in Dallas “after being infected with covid-19,” their spokesmen said in a statement.

The Texan had received cancer treatment “in recent years,” they detailed.

On January 21, Ron Wright announced that he had tested positive for COVID-19 “after having been in contact with an individual with the virus” the previous week.

“I feel mild symptoms but in general I am fine and I will continue working (…) from home this week”He added in a statement, calling for compliance with the instructions of the United States health authorities to combat the spread of the virus.

Ron Wright thus became the first of 535 legislators in Congress (435 in the House and 100 in the Senate) to succumb to the disease.

Luke Letlow, The 41-year-old, who was elected in the November elections to serve in the lower house on behalf of the state of Louisiana, died of COVID-19 in December, before taking office in early January.
