‘Repsol won’t pay me …’: López Obrador to US congressmen

NAVA, Coahuila

“Repsol does not pay me, the Mexicans pay me” and I will not step back to defend, within the framework of the law, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), warned the president of Mexico , Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

In responding to accusations by US legislators that the current federal administration violates the specifications of the renegotiated Free Trade Agreement with Canada and the United States by defending public companies, from the José López Portillo thermoelectric plant in Nava, Coahuila, the president of the republic emphasized that our country has the sovereign and absolute right to decide on energy policy.

In addition to the fact that subsoil property in Mexico “belongs to the nation, it is not private property,” declared the head of the federal executive.

“They say in their display: The government of Mexico is determined to protect the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), what is the role of the government? Protect private interests? No, the only businesses that officials should import It is public business, Repsol does not pay me, Mexicans pay me to serve them and that is why I have to defend the public interest, not the interest of individuals, “said López Obrador.

He then highlighted the path to carry out an energy counter-reform if the current legal framework is not enough for the spirit that our country is sovereign in its energy policy decisions to continue to prevail.

This is because the last reform promoted by the then president, Enrique Peña Nieto, benefited a few individuals and transnational companies, leaving Pemex and the CFE in a delicate and disadvantageous situation to such an extent that there are underutilized facilities for the benefit of individuals.

He recalled that Repsol, for example, not only took the former Mexican energy secretary to work, but also Felipe Calderón, former president of the country.

“And they are still dissatisfied, when they should be offering apologies for the abuse and atrocities that were committed in the neoliberal period,” he said.

President López Obrador promised to comply with what was offered in terms of strengthening Pemex and the CFE “without violating the law and any agreement”, although if necessary, he will promote a new energy reform to give preference to both companies “that is clear.”

He said that it is necessary to maintain the objective so as not to increase the prices of fuels, as well as electricity and diesel.

“We need to rescue Pemex and the Federal Electricity Commission, fundamental public companies and we are doing it with the support of the workers (…) we are going to increase the dispatch, we are going to search without violating the law we are going to find that they are not underutilized these plants and thus more help can be made to the producers and to all the people who live in this region of the country. “

“I am going to send an initiative to reform the constitution so that the spirit of article 27 of the Constitution prevails again: the policy of Venustiano Carranza, the policy of Lázaro Cárdenas and Adolfo López Mateos,” added the president.
