Jakarta –
Have you ever wondered how life could start on a planet other than Earth? It seems that the goal of creating human colonies in space will continue to be realized. Now, scientists are competing to achieve it.
Scientists and space researchers from various countries are currently continuing to make efforts on how to reproduce the first baby born in space.
Scientists think about this, because if humans want to colonize outer space it will take a long time.
Therefore, for a long time, researchers felt it was important to understand how human reproduction can still take place well in very different environments.
Project to Build a Colony on Mars
Launching the page Science FocusNASA is working with the Canadian, Japanese and European space agencies to develop the Gateway program to build a space station in lunar orbit that will be managed by humans.
On the other hand, various billionaires such as Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos continue to devise plans to establish colonies on the planets Mars and Venus, as well as launch space tourism companies.
All of this is the first step in humanity’s efforts to explore outer space. However, scientists assess, before anything goes further, the challenge of reproducing babies in space must be solved.
Challenges of Reproducing Babies in Space
Scientists admit that one of the main problems of reproducing babies in space is radiation and gravity which is different from Earth.
To overcome this problem, SpaceBorn United, a company based in the Netherlands, has developed miniature test tube babies and embryo incubators. They sought to test humans’ ability to reproduce in space.
It can be seen that recently the company successfully completed a drop test from a height of 20 km above Earth to test the impact of radiation on organic materials.
SpaceBorn United CEO, Dr. Egbert Edelbroek explained that they had to understand how low gravity, like that on Mars, would affect the development of human embryos.
On the other hand, if this is successful, the research could also provide important insights into improving the success of IVF treatment on Earth.
Natural vs Artificial Reproduction in Space
The next step taken by scientists is to utilize biotechnology in space, including the development of an artificial uterus.
A research team in Israel has succeeded in making mouse embryos grow outdoors for 11 days, and SpaceBorn United hopes to achieve the first five days with mice before moving on to human cells and embryos.
They want to overcome the challenges of reproduction in space, while complying with applicable legal restrictions on human embryo research.
Currently, the company has focused on the early stages of reproduction, namely conception and early embryonic development.
They also realize that their long-term goal is to perform births in space, but they are trying to achieve small steps first.
As for the plans, the first launch of SpaceBorn United will be scheduled for 2025 and the plan is to send humans to colonize Mars or Venus in 2050.
