Representatives of Russia and Ukraine met in the UAE last week to discuss the possibility of exchange of prisoners of war, This was reported by Reuters, citing three sources familiar with the story.
Any trade will be related to recovery of Russian exports of ammonia to Asia and Africa through a Ukrainian pipeline. Ammonia is used to make fertilizers.
The sources specify it the negotiations are mediated by the Arab state and do not involve the United Nations despite the organization’s leading role in negotiating the ongoing deal for the export of agricultural products from three Ukrainian Black Sea ports.
The negotiations aim to remove the remaining obstacles the grain business, extended last week, as well as alleviating global food shortages by unblocking Ukrainian and Russian exports, they explained.
After the extension of the wheat agreement, the secretary-general of the United Nations Antonio Guterres welcomed the decision and assured that the United Nations is “fully committed to removing the remaining obstacles to the export of food and fertilizers from Russia”.
