Reported car emissions rose by up to 4%. WLTP is to blame

Although in most categories the increase is more of a paper, the current market offer is far from the required limit of 95 grams of carbon dioxide per km.

The reported average amount of car emissions on Czech roads has increased by one to four percent over the last two years. The reason is the transition to a new, more accurate methodology for measuring WLTP car consumption. Automakers have thus moved away from meeting EU emission limits. While the emission range for petrol engines has shifted “on paper” by one gram to 126 to 142 grams of CO2/ km, a more rapid development can be observed in diesel cars, where the growth was by four percent to 113 to 128 grams of CO2/ km. This follows from the analysis of the consulting company EY.

Although in most categories, except for SUVs, the increase is more paper, according to EY partner Petr Knap, the current market offer is far from 95 grams of CO2 per km, which the EU is demanding of cars for next year. This can lead to the withdrawal of some models from the market.

A new methodology for measuring emissions and consumption WLTP (The Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure) was created after the dieselgate case. In contrast to the previous method, which basically measured emissions in laboratory conditions, the new method measures values in real operation and brings them closer to reality.

“The real comparison of the values from 2018 with this year’s figures is problematic due to the change in methodology and sounds worse, especially for cars of lower categories. Only thanks to a change in the calculation can we observe an average increase in emissions of 20 grams of CO2. If we take this into account, the resulting increase in the order of units of grams, on the other hand, testifies to the great technical progress of the car manufacturers, “Knap said.

The record holders for the increase in emissions are mild and micro hybrid cars, mainly due to the extension to generally less economical units. Although the values of hybrids from this year are significantly lower than for cars without hybrid technology, they are still significantly higher than the EU requirement. After exceeding it, the theoretical obligation arises for the manufacturer to pay a significant fine. On the other hand, the reduction in emission values is evident in plug-in hybrid vehicles, by approximately 20 percent to 33 to 40 grams. In addition to the methodology, this is mainly due to the entry of this technology into mainstream models.
