René Higuita Soccer Hall of Fame: Honors in Mexico

René Higuita Enshrined in⁤ International Soccer Hall of Fame

PACHUCA, Mexico – Colombian football icon René Higuita‍ was inducted into the International Soccer Hall ⁤of Fame on Tuesday, November 11, during a ceremony held in Pachuca, Mexico. The legendary goalkeeper, renowned for his flamboyant ‍style and unforgettable saves, was one of ‌fifteen international figures honored at the 13th edition of the event.

Higuita, a pivotal figure for the Colombian National Team,‍ enjoyed a distinguished career in his home country, highlighted ⁤by winning the 1989 Copa Libertadores with Atlético Nacional. Upon receiving the honor, higuita expressed his profound gratitude,‌ stating, “Entering the International Soccer Hall ‍of Fame is one of ⁤the greatest honors of my ​life.”

the induction ceremony proved⁢ emotional ​for⁣ the‌ celebrated shot-stopper. “I’m a little​ nervous,” Higuita admitted.”it’s better to be on a playing field with a hundred⁣ thousand spectators. This scenario is intimidating. Disbelief invades me. ⁣I’m in a place where figures like Beckham, Beckenbauer, Hugo Sánchez, Maradona, Zico, Javier Aguirre, Cruyff, Valdano, platini, ⁢Pelé and​ Zidane, among others, have passed thru.”

Joining Higuita in the‌ Hall of Fame’s Class ⁣of 2024 were fellow football luminaries Iker Casillas, Dunga, Gary Lineker,⁣ Ronald Koeman, ‌Diego Forlán, Ubaldo Fillol, ⁢and Bernardo ‘Manolete’ Hernández. Ignacio ‍Ambriz, currently the coach of James Rodríguez at León, was also among those recognized.

Higuita’s inclusion celebrates not only his⁣ sporting achievements but also his unique personality and ⁢contributions to the spectacle of the game, solidifying his​ place among football’s all-time greats.
