Remembering Tina Turner: The Daring Smile and Smoky Voice of a Legend

The terrific singer and stage artist has died at the age of 83. She had had a string of hits with her husband Ike Turner in the 1960s and 70s and worked through their difficult marriage before becoming one of the most successful solo artists in middle age with the chart hit “What’s Love Got to Do With It”.

Smoky voice and daring smile

Her trademarks were her smoky contralto voice, her daring smile and strong cheekbones, her range of wigs and her quick feet on stage.

She has sold more than 150 million records worldwide, won 11 Grammys and was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991. In 2005 she was honored at the Kennedy Center, where she was praised by Beyoncé and Oprah Winfrey, among others. Her life became the basis for a 2021 film, a Broadway musical and an HBO documentary, which she described as her public goodbye.

The last years at Lake Zurich

Tina Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock in a Tennessee hospital. She spent her last years on a 260,000 square meter property on Lake Zurich.

The world bows to one of the greatest singers in history.
