Relaxation in the Netherlands, but catering, event industry and culture sector remain closed | Abroad

In the Netherlands, the catering, event industry and culture sector will remain closed, Prime Minister Mark Rutte confirmed at a press conference. There are, however, some relaxations.

Pressure is increasing from all sides to relax the corona measures, the head of government said. He says he understands that. Following the advice of the Outbreak Management Team (OMT), the Dutch government also sees room to let go of rules, but that does not yet offer solace for all sectors. The catering industry, the event sector and the cultural sector must remain closed for a while.

The government wants to encourage the use of medical mouth masks, said Health Minister Ernst Kuipers. They are therefore not mandatory, but they are urgent advice.

The number of places where it is recommended to wear them is being expanded. Wherever it is not possible to keep 1.5 meters away, it is recommended to wear a mouth mask. This applies, for example, to busy outdoor public places, such as shopping streets. But also in the workplace. The advice is also to wear a disposable mouth mask from now on. Fabrics and homemade mouth caps are not recommended.

• From Saturday, the Dutch will again be able to receive four people at home, instead of two. However, one is not allowed to visit more than one household per day.

• Sports competitions within your own club are also possible again. The corona ticket remains mandatory from the age of 18 for indoor sports and for practicing art and culture, indoors and outdoors. However, the public is not allowed.

• Shops, hairdressers, university food and sex shops may reopen. However, the shops have to close at 5 pm, the distance rules and mouth mask are mandatory. Essential stores, such as supermarkets and drugstores, remain open until 8 p.m.

• The quarantine obligation lapses for those who have received a booster shot or who have been infected this year.

Rutte emphasized that not everything can open at the same time. The infection rates are simply too high for that.

With the relaxed package of measures announced by the government, the daily number of infections could possibly rise to 75,000 or 80,000 per day. “Those are huge numbers,” the prime minister acknowledged.

On Tuesday 25 January there will be a new “weighing moment” with the catering and cultural sector as a priority.
