Relatives of the pharmacist Alexis Reyes, denounce that his death occurred due to a respiratory arrest, caused by a twenty-hour blackout in the sentinel center of Los Teques, where he had been for a week, with a respirator, after having been diagnosed COVID-19.

Reyes was a pharmacy professional with more than 20 years of experience in public hospital services, and on August 1 he was hospitalized with symptoms of coronavirus. His relatives say he was recovering in the Intensive Care Unit.

However, he suffered a respiratory arrest when the devices to which he was connected stopped working, said his daughter Gabriela Reyes.

Dr. Reyes died at the Victorino Santaella Hospital in Los Teques, the capital of Miranda state. The death certificate indicates that he died of respiratory failure and contagion of COVID-19, although the results never came, so they could not watch over him either.

Reyes began to feel ill in the middle of July. Therefore, a coronavirus screening test was done, which came out negative. However, the discomfort continued and in addition, her daughter also fell ill.

Complicated days

Gabriela recalled that her mother and sister had to bring her food and water, since the hospital did not provide them.

The nurses and doctors commented that the patient was improving compared to how he had arrived, which coincided with the written notes that the patient sent to their relatives. Consequently, the complaint about his death was unexpected for the family.

“He told us how good he felt; in fact, he arrived with 62 saturation and on Saturday he already had 94. The PCR test came out positive, but they never gave us the results of the swab test ”, stressed the doctor’s first-born daughter.

Total blackout

Gabriela told The Pitazo, what “The workers commented that the hospital plant only worked for 2 hours, but the light went out for approximately 20 hours. The situation turned into chaos: patients screamed in the dark, children cried and the few staff ran from one place to another, “he declared.

Gabriela said that her father also panicked. “She started to scream and despair seized her. Doctors tried to stabilize him, but around 11:00 pm, he went into respiratory arrest. “If the light did not fail or my father had been accompanied, the story would be different “, lament.

They only found out what happened Sunday morning when they went to bring the pharmacist breakfast.

It should be noted that, previously, the nurses could not communicate with the relatives due to signal problems in the hospital, so they were notoriously moved by the news.

Finally, the youngest daughter of the Kings added that despite this, the doctor’s family could not say goodbye to him, because he was immediately transferred to the place where he was to be cremated.
