Régis Le Bris, new Lorient coach: “I like risk”

Appointed coach of Lorient until 2025, Régis Le Bris led, this Friday morning, his first collective training of the pro group on field 3 of the Ploemeur training center. Accompanied by his staff (to be completed by a goalkeeper coach), the 46-year-old technician focused this inaugural session, in which 25 players were present, on small high-intensity repeated passing games. A leg that the former director of training for Hakes wishes to develop.

You led your first session with the pro group this Friday morning. How did you experience it?
I experienced it very naturally. I feel so at home here. I had no particular apprehension, I was very happy to be there. This outfit (from first team coach) seems very natural to me and does not differ from that of a trainer that I had a few days ago.

After ten years at the head of the formation, was it time to take the step of Ligue 1?
Until now, I was not eligible because the BEPF dictates the possibility of being there or not. I showed up there three times, so there was already an ulterior motive about the possibility of one day coaching as a pro. I graduated in May. The high level pleases me. When you advance in a career as an educator, the higher you go, the more you realize the possibilities of expression of the players: they do everything faster, everything better… As a coach, there is something exciting to go to higher levels. Then, touch Ligue 1 this year, next year or in two years, I had no calendar in my career profile.

What is your game plan?
I subscribe to the continuity of the spirit around the identity of FC Lorient, already installed at the level of the training center. I arrived here ten years ago, convinced by Christian Gourcuff that this was the place to practice. We worked together for two years. I tried to capitalize on this story and bring my sensitivity to it, to arrive today at a project that revolves around three ideas.

1) Intensity. It will be a key element for us to run a lot, to support the efforts, to go to the end of the matches with a very high intensity which allows us to be efficient.
2) Cooperation. I believe a lot in team football. An idea that I picked up from Christian Gourcuff is the relationship between the players which brings something more than the addition of each individually.
3) The ability to adapt to the problems that arise. We will always attack a match with a plan, provided the quality of the responses is made on the field.

“Today, I cannot say what the potential of this team is and limit it by fixing a classification”

This season is atypical with four descents. What is your objective ?
Be ourselves and use all of our resources within the team, the staff to give the best. Today, I cannot say what the potential of this team is and limit it by fixing a classification. There is a reality in Ligue 1, it is to avoid certain very dangerous places. All seasons in Ligue 1 are highly competitive. There will be a first Championship for the title and Europe and, then, a whole series of clubs which will have the same concerns as ours. Competition is risk. I like risk so I’m comfortable with it.

Two recruits were present this Friday morning, the side Gédéon Kalulu (AC Ajaccio) and Darlin Yongwa (Niort). Your president Loïc Féry has announced the arrival of four to six players. What positions are you targeting?
As I told the players, we are working to strengthen the goalkeeper position (Benoît Costil is one of the porters observed), which seems to be an important point even if everything remains open, and we are looking for a dominant central defender to give the team confidence. For now, I have a few ideas, but it’s way too early to talk about them. The preparation and the first matches will tell us more about the balance of the team and will potentially allow us to see the needs emerge. »
