Refugees preparing for their studies. Successful degrees and development potential

Research results, research projects

Education is an important prerequisite for the self-determined participation of new immigrants. The integration services of the German education system also play a decisive role in the adequate resumption of educational and professional careers by qualified refugees. The project “Ways of Refugees to German Universities”, or WeGe for short, is dedicated to the question of the conditions under which refugees can successfully prepare for their studies in Germany. Today central results on this topic are published in the DZHW-Brief publication series.

Hanover, November 26, 2020. In recent years, there have been an increasing number of highly qualified refugees among the study applicants from non-EU countries. Your study preparation has not least developed through public funding programs of the federal government, such as the Integra program, but also through programs of many federal states. The DZHW-Brief published today gives insights into the formal and practical design of the university access routes for refugees as well as their situation in preparation for studies. The long-term effects of innovations in the field of study preparation have yet to be seen, also because many projects are dependent on short- and medium-term project funding. However, survey data from the WeGe project already document that many refugee applicants were able to successfully complete their study preparation. The DZHW study estimates the success rate at around 72 percent, i.e. almost three quarters of the refugee study applicants surveyed. The preparation for your studies is burdened by financial problems or a prospect of residency that is perceived as uncertain. “Since the great majority of refugees successfully complete their study preparation despite all this, a deficit perspective on this group turns out to be unfounded. Rather, a resource perspective could help to make better use of potential, ”explains project manager Michael Grüttner. According to the WeGe project, a strong connection to the desired subject as well as linguistic and social integration prove to be particularly advantageous. These factors help to mobilize important resources in order to get closer to the goal of taking up a degree in Germany. Nevertheless, refugees differ in the probability of their study preparation success from other international applicants, whose estimated probability of success is another 15 percentage points higher, i.e. 87%. For this reason, the university researchers assume that better flanking of study preparation through other university, social and migration policy regulations as well as early individual education and study advice and target group-oriented information strategies could help develop further potential for refugee applicants .
