Red Sox Take Game 1 Against Yankees in ALDS, One Win Away From Series Victory
NEW YORK – Masataka Yoshida’s two-run single in the seventh inning propelled the Boston Red Sox to a 3-1 victory over the New York Yankees in the opening game of their best-of-three American League Division Series on Tuesday. The Red Sox now lead the series 1-0 and need just one more win to advance.
Anthony Volpe homered earlier in the game for the Yankees. Boston’s Brayan Bello pitched 7 ⅔ innings, striking out 11 and allowing only four hits, setting a career high with 117 pitches thrown. Aroldis Chapman secured the save for the Red Sox, escaping a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the ninth inning against his former team.
The Yankees loaded the bases in the ninth with singles from Paul Goldschmidt, Aaron Judge, and Cody Bellinger, but Chapman retired Giancarlo Stanton, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Trent Grisham to end the threat.
“You could see in his eyes, before the match, how steadfast he was,” said Alex Bregman about Bello. “Simply a performance that starters of special occasions achieve.”
Bello is now 4-0 against the Yankees this season. The Red Sox have a 10-4 regular season record against New York.
“We have had major counts of three balls and two strikes, and several counts favorable to hitters, but we were simply unable to capitalize,” analyzed Goldschmidt.
The Red Sox lead the all-time playoff series against the Yankees 13-12,having won nine of their last ten matchups.
Game 2 is scheduled for Wednesday in New York, with Carlos Rodón starting for the Yankees and brayan Bello expected to start for the Red Sox.
