We both love that cute, chunky aesthetic, and that was definitely fostered by playing Nintendo games, like ‘Pokmon,’ like ‘EarthBound. There is something so attractive about how they can stylize their world. in such an attractive, chubby and cute way. When we were looking at developing the look of our movie, we saw ‘Breath of the Wild’ and said, ‘Wow, how can they make the world feel so beautiful and rich, but they’re still able to simplify it?’

Domee Shi has declared herself a fan of Zelda and Pokémon; even, she remembers how she used to play titles of these franchises on portable consoles like the Game Boy Color and the Nintendo DS Lite. However, her love for video games did not end in adolescence. Shi also commented on how her parents weren’t entirely happy with her taste in video games.

[My parents]have pretty much the same attitude that a lot of parents have at the time, and even now, which is ‘This is a waste of time. Are you obsessed with this? Get out and get some fresh air and exercise.’ They don’t really get it.

Network Director, production run entirely by women talked about how she used to be very similar to the protagonist of the tape, Mei.

If someone told 13-year-old me, who drew Pokémon or Sonic fan art for dollars and weird trinkets, that I could make a living off of it and make a million dollar movie about it, I think they’d be shocked. I am proud that I was able to put my experience on display for the world to see and hopefully promote more stories from different cultures.
