Red Bull CEO Helmut Marko: ‘Max Verstappen was the only one relaxed’ Motorsport

sport">The World Cup leader narrowly kept his great rival Lewis Hamilton behind in blistering final laps at the Circuit of the Americas. ,,I feel relaxed now, but I think Max was the only one at Red Bull who was relaxed a few laps before the end. We were all more than nervous,” said Marko, who already made Verstappen’s debut in Formula 1 in 2015.

sport">As Hamilton took over the lead after the start, Verstappen had to give chase and Red Bull decided to bring him in early for a first stop. “Max didn’t make a mistake at the start, but the clutch didn’t work quite as it should,” Marko explained in Austin. “That made it much more difficult for us. Max was faster, but couldn’t overtake and therefore couldn’t show the speed that was in it. If he had stayed first after the start, he would have pulled away in five to eight seconds. That was not the case and so we had to change our strategy. We knew it was going to be close, but we have Max. And we can count on that.”

sport">Things are looking increasingly rosy for Verstappen, on the hunt for his first world title. His lead over Hamilton is twelve points with five races to go. ,,We definitely need one or two more wins,’ says Marko. “Hopefully we can achieve that during the upcoming races in Mexico and Brazil. Then I will definitely go to the Middle East with peace of mind for the last three games.”
