The recovery of a British bomber from the IJsselmeer has been completed. According to a spokesperson for the municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân, remains were found in the Avro Lancaster until the last day of the recovery.
Research by the Defense Recovery and Identification Service must reveal whether these are the remains of the three crew members who have been missing since the plane crashed in 1943.
The Lancaster ED603 was shot out of the sky in 1943 by a German night fighter after a bombing raid on the German city of Bochum. The aircraft with seven crew members crashed into the IJsselmeer, near the Breezanddijk. Four bodies washed ashore in the following weeks, but the other three crew members remained untraceable.
In 2021, the municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân registered the salvage of the Lancaster for the National Aircraft Wreckage Salvage Program, which started in 2019. The aim of this program is to remove dozens of wrecks, probably containing remains from the Second World War, from the Dutch soil or water.
Previously, a British bomber was recovered from the Markermeer and a German Messerschmidt from the seabed in Dalfsen, Overijssel.
According to the municipality, approximately 40 percent of the device has been recovered. In addition to human remains, a radio and a pilot’s seat were found. Relatives of the three missing crew members visited the salvage facility.
