Recovered a crashed defense helicopter near Aruba | NOW

The NH90 defense helicopter crashed near Aruba has been recovered, the Ministry of Defense reports on Wednesday. The parts are now being brought to the Netherlands, so that the Defense Security Inspectorate (IVD) can further investigate the cause of the crash.

The helicopter sank a few days after the crash after two of the four floats, a type of balloons that held the vehicle on the surface of the water, burst.

The aircraft was later found in two parts by the Ministry of Defense. The tailpiece, which was about 12 kilometers off the coast of Aruba at a depth of about 450 meters, was the first to be removed from the water. The hull was about 100 kilometers away in the waters of Venezuela at a depth of almost 1.5 kilometers.

The parts arrived in the port of Curaçao on Wednesday afternoon and are transported by ship to the Netherlands.

Cause of helicopter crash is still being investigated

The NH90 helicopter crashed on July 19 while on its way back to the naval vessel Zr. Ms. Groningen. There were four soldiers on board. The 34-year-old pilot Christine Martens and the 33-year-old coordinator Erwin Warnies were killed. The two survivors were not seriously injured.

How the accident could have happened is still unknown. Initial investigation results have shown that it is unlikely that there was a technical or mechanical failure.

The Defense Security Inspectorate, like the Dutch Safety Board, will investigate the incident. The black box of the device found earlier is also being investigated.
